Dr. Peterman is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Kansas, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Prior to returning to Purdue University for his Ph.D., he was a design engineer in the prestressed industry for 3 1/2 years in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Peterman has over 100 technical publications, including over 70 addressing prestressed concrete bond, behavior and durability, and over 25 of these are related to concrete railroad ties.

Dr. Peterman is a fellow of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and is a regular speaker at national conferences. He is currently Chairperson of the PCI Prestressing Reinforcement Committee, a member of ASTM ASTM A.01 (Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloys) and sub-committee A01.05 (Steel Reinforcement), and a member of ASTM D20 (Plastics) and sub-committee D20.18.02 (Pultruded Shapes),

From 2004-2007, Dr. Peterman was the principal investigator on a project to determine the bond between prestressing strand and self-consolidating concrete (SCC). This research led to the development of a test procedure for the evaluation of bonds in pre-tensioned members, which is often referred to as the “Peterman Beam Test,” and has been utilized by many PCI producer members to verify the quality of the bond between their concrete mixtures and strand.
